“In giving birth to our babies, we may find that we give birth to new possibilities within ourselves.” - Myla & Jon Kabat-Zinn

What is a Doula?

A birth doula is trained, non-medical assistant who provides continuous one-on-one physical, emotional and informational support you before, during and after childbirth.

As your doula I serve as a constant presence of support and an emotional anchor for you and your family. I am also a professional yoga therapist with over a decade of experience to draw from to support you. I will offer education, serve as an advocate, and help with comfort measures, acupressure,  aromatherapy, massage and mindfulness techniques such as deep breathing, relaxation, movement and positioning.

Unlike medical staff, who change shifts and have other jobs to do, your doula’s only job is supporting you and assisting your loved-ones in supporting you as well.  As your doula I also provide support with breastfeeding and postpartum wellness after birth.

Visit Evidence Based Birth to find out what the research demonstrates about the impacts of Doulas on birth outcomes.

“Having Malaika as my Doula was great because she has a warm and welcoming aura. Participating in her Maternitea prenatal yoga classes was really helpful but having her with me during labour was priceless. I think what helped me the most was the guided breathing and the essential oils that she used for massage. The lavender was very calming, and the citrus oil gave me a boost of energy in those moments when I needed it most. Even though I had my family with me for support, she was more willing to push me when I needed encouragement to keep moving and walking. She was also such a great support and comfort for my family. Using the birth ball with Malaika during labour helped me stay active and ease through contractions. When I returned to the hospital after birth everyone knew me as ‘The Ball Lady’, since they had not seen a birth ball used before.

As moms having the baby blues is natural yet we aren’t always able to open up and talk about it. When Malaika came by for her postpartum home visit I was able to talk to her and she made me feel comfortable in going through my journey and the whole process of becoming a mom.”

“I always knew that I wanted to work with a doula when I became pregnant, but being pregnant during a pandemic and far away from my family made working with a doula an absolute necessity if I wanted to have the birth that I envisioned. Despite everything being virtual, from the very beginning, Malaika was warm, professional, and extremely knowledgeable about the services she offered. We had a few one-on-one sessions with her in preparation for labor, and she checked in with me frequently leading up to labor day. When that special time came, Malaika was literally present for the ENTIRE thing, making herself available via Zoom for over 9 hours!!! I cannot recommend her enough. She is extremely dedicated to what she does. Her help through my labor was invaluable and I do not think I would have had the natural birth experience I wanted without her help. She is amazing and we are blessed to know her!”

“It was such a blessing and privilege to have Malaika work with my partner and I as we prepared for the birth of our son, Sol. Pregnancy is such a deeply personal and spiritual thing and it was so important for me to find a doula I felt comfortable and safe with. Because Malaika was in Grenada and I was in Philadelphia during my pregnancy our sessions were via video call and it was such a beautiful experience that didn’t feel impersonal at all.

What was most important for me wasn’t just getting help for my son’s journey into the world, but making sure my partner felt confident in his ability to be my support during the process. Malaika’s love for and knowledge of her work was evident to both of us and she really helped us with what to expect and wonderful tools to flow through the process. I’m so honored to have worked with her and would not just recommend, but encourage others to do the same.”

If you have ever had the opportunity to be in a room with Malaika you understand the type of energy and flow she carries; calmness and grace. I am forever grateful that I was fortunate to share that same energy with her during one of most sentimental and volatile chapters of my life.

During our sessions , Malaika ensured that we all felt supported with gratitude and love. It didn’t stop there either, both my partner and I were able to maintain that same energy not only during my pregnancy but also at the birth of our beautiful son. With Malaika’s tremendous amount of guidance and light we were gently reminded of our purpose and duty. It is without a doubt that she played a big role in our Big Day!”

After enduring a difficult child birth, we were referred to Malaika to advise on breastfeeding, and infant and postpartum care. As first-time parents, to say she came through for us would be an understatement. Malaika's expertise, empathy, and holistic approach to supporting women and families gave us the tools to become more confident in our abilities as new parents.

She provided current and relevant information, all the while showing knowledge and appreciation of traditional practices. She tailored her services to our needs and comfort level. Overall, I believe she offers much needed services that have the potential to greatly benefit women and families.

Hiring Malaika as our doula was the best decision we ever made during the pregnancy. The simple fact that she was all about us and showed so much interest in the health and wellbeing of the baby was amazing. She checked in daily to find out how everything was going. She encouraged me to get plenty of rest and exercise a little when I felt up to it.

At the hospital is where Malaika came through the most. Every time I felt like I couldn't do it, she reminded me that I could, and that it would all be worth it in the end. She brought her working tools, like the birth ball to help with the laboring process and also calming aromatherapy oils. She performed massages and applied heat therapy to ease some of the contraction and back pains, and trust me, it worked wonders! My grandma was also at the hospital with us and she also found Malaika very attentive and pleasant.

After I got home with baby, Malaika came by to check on us. She brought organic vegetables from her dad’s garden, Moringa leaves to help with breastmilk production and handouts with advice about breastfeeding. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her!”

“Prior to our experience with Malaika we were naive to what our pregnancy and childbirth journey would entail. Emotionally, we were struggling amidst COVID-19, dealing with raging hormones, and processing an unplanned pregnancy; we were anxious to fill our heads with as much information as possible, in preparation to receive our baby girl. Having previously attended Malaika’s classes I knew her warm spirit was just what we were craving.

Malaika made us feel supported, peaceful, loved, grateful, confident, vulnerable, and inspired before, during, and birth. We appreciated her authenticity and experience as a mother and doula. During our virtual sessions, Malaika created a safe space free from bias and filled with support. Through labor and delivery, she advised my mother and partner how they could best support me.

Postpartum, Malaika guided me through a super emotional healing and breastfeeding process.

This journey was very delicate for us so we wanted to be mindful of the energy in which we received our blessing. Malaika understood this and consciously delivered from start to finish.”

I first reached to Malaika when my husband and I decided that we were ready to start a family. I contacted Malaika to ask about Doula services she may be aware of in my area. She gave me some ideas and then pointed out that she did virtual Doula services also. I remember when I thought I was pregnant I reached out to her again and that is when I decided that I wanted her involved in my pregnancy journey.

I knew Malaika from childhood and felt comfortable sharing such a personal time with her. She was flexible in her creation of a plan that was bespoke for my needs. Malaika has such a calming way about her that makes you feel at ease, she also makes it easy to bring things up and not feel judged at all. I took advantage of her prenatal yoga sessions and my husband and I were also provided with some useful tips on how to work together during the labour and delivery and this went a long way in helping us both feel confident about the birth. So confident that when we went into active labour late at night we were able to put all we learned into practice and had the birth that we wanted. I would recommend Malaika for Doula services and prenatal yoga for anyone wanting to have the best people on their birth support team.
